HEALTH / A Simple Skin Essential

My poor skin has really been through it over the years.

As a teen, it was my insistence to get some "color" that the glamazons around me seemed to get so effortlessly (with help from tanning beds and crazy "accelerator" creams). Newsflash: my English/Irish (?) heritage is a long way away from sunny St. Tropez. I don't think it wants to have a sun-kissed glow quite like y'all bronzed beach babies can get.

In my 20's, I started developing rosacea. Sexy, huh? I found prescription products that help from my dermatologist, but not until my 30's. Yeah, I dealt with the redness way too long, back before we could adjust things like that with Instagram filters.

It's not easy keeping sensitive skin happy... and that's where a tonic like this one, from Earth Science, comes in. My friends started calling it my "baby skin spray" years ago, from sheer glee, I'm sure, that they no longer had to look at my haggard, parched and flaky face when I used it consistently.

I'm no skincare guru, here's what I know. It's a "tonic" – like a mist-on toner. Earth Science, the company that makes it, says it's great at moisturizing, soothing or makeup setting (if you're so inclined).

For me, it's a great pick-me-up in the morning and throughout the day. It freshens, cools and energizes skin, says Earth Science (and I agree). I don't love sticky lotions; since this is easy (and refreshing) to apply, I use it more often.

More benefits, says Earth Science:

• For all skin types • 100% oil-free • Can be used on entire body • Ideal moisturizer for those prone to breakouts • Paraben Free & Vegan • Never tested on animals

What's in it, really?

"Highly effective extracts of raspberry leaf, aloe vera, calendula, sea kelp, chamomile, comfrey and fennel... Also contains special 'ultra-moisturizers' such as panthenol, sodium PCA, and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and improve the skin's appearance while toning and protecting it from the drying effects of the sun."

OK sounds great, right? Plus, it's around $10 for 8 ounces, so you can spray to your heart's content. Stick it in the refrigerator for some extra cooling relief during warm weather.
